Sunderland Station is used by both mainline passenger and Metro trains. In recent years, commercial development has taken place over the underground station but with little corresponding investment in the station itself.

The advent of the Metro service to Sunderland stimulated the desire to improve the station to provide better customer services and a better environment for passengers.

Reid Jubb Brown Architecture are currently working on the refurbishment  for the platforms of the station. This involves close liaison with Nexus, Network Rail, train operating companies and Sunderland City Council.

The £4.8m scheme will transform the station with the use of glass and lighting to provide a dramatic new station environment. It is expected to complete in May 2010.
